American History in a Box Level F

American History in a Box Level IV

Designed for middle school students, American History in a Box: Level F also works well for advanced 5th graders or older students who are ready for a deeper and more rigorous study of American history.

This level provides a comprehensive, literature-rich exploration of U.S. history from exploration and early settlement through modern times. Students engage with more advanced texts, historical analysis, and structured writing tasks that build critical thinking and independent learning skills.

The program includes an encyclopedia, carefully selected historical fiction and nonfiction books, and a standards-based activity workbook designed to support both depth of understanding and academic skill development in a screen-free format.

Students will study major eras and themes in greater depth, including key events, ideas, and historical developments that shaped the United States.

The activity workbook strengthens literacy, historical thinking, and analytical writing through a variety of engaging tasks, such as:

  • map work and geographic analysis
  • charts and data interpretation
  • book reviews and reading reflections
  • historical illustrations and visual responses
  • journaling and creative writing prompts
  • document analysis and critical thinking exercises
  • word searches and vocabulary reinforcement
  • compare-and-contrast activities

Students also complete structured writing assignments, including book reports, short-answer responses, and a final project that incorporates multiple skills. A timeline activity helps students organize and synthesize historical events chronologically.

Each section includes a “What Your Child Should Know” page at the beginning to guide learning and a “Questions to Ask Your Child” page at the end to support deeper family discussion, reflection, and debate.

Created using Common Core recommendations and Virginia Standards of Learning (SOL), this program builds strong foundations in historical knowledge, writing, analysis, and independent learning.
